The City of Bonn Opening Reception marks the official commencement of the IHDP Open Meeting 2009. Taking place on the eve of the conference, the reception will welcome the delegates to this beautiful and international city and provide participants with the perfect opportunity to meet before the conference. It will also give them the possibility to register and sign in for the IHDP Open Meeting onsite at the nearby World Conference Center Bonn prior to the big event.
About the Sponsors
The City of Bonn's presence will be felt throughout the conference. In the German United Nations City, various UN organisations are working around the common theme 'UN in Bonn - working towards sustainable development world-wide'. The city of Bonn works hard to promote sustainability in its own activities and works closely with Bonn’s UN organisations in so doing.
The IHDP Secretariat has long enjoyed a close relationship with the Deutsche Welle, which is located only metres away from both the UN Campus and the World Conference Center. The Deutsche Welle is Germany’s international broadcaster: online, on-screen and on air, providing a European perspective to audiences around the world and promoting intercultural dialogue. In this spirit of intercultural exchange, the Deutsche Welle has offered its headquarters to IHDP as in kind support for the international event that is the IHDP Open Meeting 2009.

From the perspective of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research the 7th International Science Conference on the Human Dimensions of Global Change marks a milestone for the future of integrated sustainability research.
The call to participate in the world’s largest science conference on the human dimensions of global environmental change met a great positive response. More and more researchers start dealing with the „Human Dimensions“, which is a good sign and affords the important involvement that social sciences and humanities are able and need to contribute to cope with global challenges. To find concrete solutions for sustainability is, also in the light of the current economic and financial crisis, more important than ever before.
About the Sponsor
The Federal Ministry of Education and Research attaches great importance to social sciences and humanities. For more than 10 years the social-ecological research has been a focal point of support. The social dimensions of sustainability and global change are playing a major role within the Ministry´s Framework on Research for Sustainability (Fona).
It is important to:
Develop inter- and transdisciplinary research approaches
Develop an international focus for research on sustainability
Formulate concrete political and action-relevant research results
Current examples of research supported by the BMBF are:
The focal point of support “Economic Sciences for Sustainability” (2nd phase)
The second focus is on the „Social Dimensions of Climate Protection and Climate Change“.
In autumn 2009, the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies will start its work, directed by Professor Klaus Toepfer as its founding director.
